Signal Hill After the Freezing Rain

January 16th, 2008.

St. John’s, Newfoundland weather has been much maligned. For good reason at times. Rain, fog, lack of sun, snow, wind. Winter is particularly frustrating as the snow might be fun except it is usually followed by rain or freezing rain.

My first winter in St. John’s was ugly. Almost, if not actually, a record snowfall in December (150 or so centimeters) made me wonder what I had gotten myself into here.

Of course, these photos were possible because of that lousy weather. The morning sun just peaking through in the distance gave the ocean a white to blue to inky black-blue hue and the snow with the covering of ice made for a surreal experience.
